Abstract The present work deals with the study of the corrosion behaviour of lead-tin alloys in acid and alkaline media (nitric acid, acetic acid and sodium hydroxide). Two techni- ques were used to conduct the present study: the loss inweight technique and the potential-time technique. Variables studied in the present work are : acid or alkali concentra- tion, alloy composition and the resence of organic inhibi- tors. The study revealed the following results: 1- For a given alloy composition and acid or alkali con- centration, the rate of corrosion ncreases in the order, so- di urn hydroxide ’< acetic acid <ni tric acid. 2- For a certain acid or alkali concentration, the rate of corrosion decreases with increasing tin content in the alloy.3- Galvanic Cqupling of lead-tin alloys with copper didnot affect significantly the rate of alloy corrosion.4- Corrosion Potential measurement and loss in weight re- suIts point to ~he fact that the slow dissolution of tin con- rols alloy corrosion in acid and alkali media.5- Among the various organic inhibitors tried in the pre- sent work, thiourea proved to be the most effective corrosion inhibitor for the corrosion of Pb-Sn alloys in acid and alkaline media.6- Ortho nitro aniline was found to inhibit the. corrosion of Pb-Sn.alloys only in nitric aci. |
