Abstract The present work deals with the study of the rate of diffusion controlled corrosion of smooth and rough pipelines <under single phase flow, gas sparging and two phase flow (gas¬liquid). The study was carried out using the diffusion controlled dissolution of copper pipes in acidified FeCl3 solution. Variables studied were physical properties of the solution (p, J1, D), superficial gas velocity, superficial liquid velocity and surface roughness. The study revealed the following results: 1. The mass transfer coefficient of the diffusion controlled corrosion of a pipeline in single phase flow increases with liquid flow rate according to the equations: K = a V 0.79 L K = a V 0.92 for smooth pipeS for rough pipeS 2. The mass transfer coefficient of the diffusion controlled corrosion of a gas sparged copper pipe increases with gas flow rate according to the equations: <for smooth pipeS for rough pipeS |
