Abstract Aim of the work To evaluate the prophylactic management of those patients who have gastric varices with the stigmata of high risk for bleeding using intravariceal injection of cyanoacrylate with evaluation of its effect in preventing first bleeding attacks (primary prophylaxis) and assessing its safety and any hazaradous side effects. Conclusion Primary prophylaxis of gastric varices using cyanoacrylate injection is effective in preventing gastric variceal bleeding and decreases mortality in patients having high risk of bleeding gastric varices. Cyanoacrylate is a safe substance, available. It is considered cheap and easy to be used with no major complications or drawbacks, it does not affect the clinical condition of the patient, has no had effects on liver or renal functions. It doesn’t affect the portal or splenic hemodynamics of the patients and at the same time has a good effect regarding obliteration of gastric varices and prevention of the first attack of bleeding. |
