Abstract

Health is often perceived differently by elderly persons. This explains why it is difficult to change their health behaviors. The different perceptions of health affect a persons’ self-concept and the various perceptions of self-concept affect a persons’ overall health status and well-being. Older adults’ perceptions of their health and self-concept are not clearly perceived by health care providers. Thus, it is important for gerontological nurse to understand the older adults’ perceptions of health and self-concept and the factors affecting these perceptions to help the elderly people in seeking health care services and participate in health maintenance activities in order to promote their health and well-being. So, the aim of this study was to determine elder’s perception of their health and self-concept. The study was carried out in all governmental homes for elderly persons in Alexandria. The subjects were 250 resident elders aged 60 years and above, able to communicate effectively. Each elderly was interviewed individually to collect the necessary information. Data was collected by using two tools.
