Abstract 5-FU is a chemotherapeutic agent of antimetabolite group. It is widely used for the treatment of malignancies particularly gastrointestinal tumors and breast cancer. This study was done to (:, detect the teratogenic and toxic effects of 5-FU on albino rats using the therapeutic dose of the drug. Forty adult albino rats (20 males & 20 females) were used in this study and caged together for matting. They were divided into three main groups (I, II and III). Each group was further subdivided into two subgroups (a and b). Subgroup I, included 5 control pregnant female rats. Subgroup Ib included 15 pregnant female rats which were injected intraperitoneally with 2.7 mg 5-FU/ day between the and the 13th day of gestation. All offsprings of group I were examined immediately after delivery for congenital anomalies or skeletal deformities then their testes and livers. were extracted and processed for histopathological examination. Subgroup IIa included 3 control adult male rats. Subgroup IIb included 7 adult male rats which were injected intraperitoneally with 2.7 mg 5-FU/ day for 4 consequetive days. All rats of group II were sacrificed 15 days post-injection. Subgroup Ill, included 3 control adult male rats. Subgroup Ill, included 7 adult male rats which were injected intraperitoneally with 2.7 mg 5-FU/ day for 4 consequetive days. All animals of group III were sacrificed 60 days post-injection. The testes and livers of group IT and group III were extracted and processed for histopathological examination. |
