Abstract To determine knowledge, attitude and practice of the rural population at Saft El-Laban village which is located 5 km north to Minia city regarding the risks of passive smoking. Almost all subjects know that exposure to smoke leads to many diseases. About 20% of smokers and 19.6% non-smokers reported that exposure to smoke leads to bronchial asthma. About 18.5% of males reported that there was a relationship between smoking and bronchial asthma while their percentage in females was 22.7%. In addition pneumonia, as a disease that may be caused due to exposure to cigarette smoke, represents 20.8% of smokers and 26.8% of non-smokers. About 45% smokers leave the place when they are confronted with non-smokers while 24% promote ventilation. The most common attitude of non-smokers when they were confronted with smokers were either promote ventilation (45.2%) or ask smokers to stop smoking (34.4%), while 13.2% of them leave the place and only 4.8% ask smokers to leave the place. Only 2.4% reported that they do nothing in that situation. About 62.4% of smokers stop smoking and 35.2% of them advice non-smokers to ask doctors when non-smokers complain symptoms due to their smoking. |
