Abstract

Aim of this work is to study use a selrcted Panel of tumor markers in Exploring malignant pleural effusions and hence to differentiate between them and nonmalignant ones.
This study was carried out to evaluate the diagnostic utility of a panel of tumor markers in exploring malignant pleural effusion. To fulfill this aim, 60 patients with pleural effusion were enrolled in the current series (38 males and 22 females). With age range of (20-77) years and studied at Chest and Clinical Pathology Departments, Zagazig University Hospitals during the period from August, 2005 to September, 2006. A design was formulated in which 30 patients were studied to get the optimal cutoff value for each marker which discriminates between malignant and nonmalignant pleural effusions. Those values were then applied in a blind way to another 30 patients and the 60 patients were statistically analyzed.
All patients were studied through the following methods:
I- Thorough medical history. 2- Full clinical examination.
3- Plain chest X-ray (postero-anterio and lateral view). 4- Hematological investigations including:
a) Complete blood picture.
b) Liver function tests (total proteins, albumin, SGOT, SGPT, and total direct bilirubin).
c) Kidney function test (blood urea and serum creatinine)
