Abstract

On saline soils, generally, cotton plant have the ability to be differently adapted to saline conditions. Thus salinity conditions cause a number of changes in both morphological and physiological characteristics which may result in changes in the water regime as improving the dynamic of growth, the total water content and its fractions, the osmotic and suction potentials in plant tissues, besides the consumptive water through transpiration, the changes of these characteristics, however, differ according to the salt content, as well as to their composition (STHOGONOV, 1962; BERNSTIEN and HAYWARD, 1968; AZIZBEKOV and G0SSAYNOVA,1968; EDNAHASSAN PORATH, and POLYAKOFFMAYBER,1972).LAPINA (1967) stated that under sulphate conditions cotton plants are subjected to the osmotic affects. However, by increasing chloride ions the plants are subjected to the specific ion effect. STROGONV and IVANITSKY (1954), found in pot experiments that under chloride- sulphate and sulphate chloride salinity conditions a number of differences in the physiological characteristics of vegetative organs. They indicated also that the suctions potential values on cotton leaves change not only due to the level of soil salinity but also due to its type .The current investigations is an attempt firstly to study the quantitative changes of some morphological and physiclogical characteristics of cotton plants grown under different levels of soil salinity having different cl/SO 4 ratics. Secondly to follow up the quantitative changes in some morphological and physiclogical characteristics of cotton plants in relation to water thermodynamics in soil- plant system.
