Abstract

Chopped sugar cane bagasse (S.C.B.) of 5-10 em length underwent different alkali or acid treatme~ts in order to improve its nutritive value. The physio-logical reactions of animals fed these treated or nutrented S.C.B. were tested. Two experi~ents were conducted to study the physioloGical and nutritional aspects of feeding these different treatments. Mature Ossimi rams of 1-1.5 years old were a~p1ied in this work. In experiment I four Ossi~i rams were fed unntreated S.C.B.)5 % NaOR treated S.C.B., 2.5 % NaOH+ 2.5 % Ca(OH)2 treated S.C.B. and 12.35 % Iw40H (6 % NH3)treated S.C.B. in a 4x4 latin square arrangement. The untreated or treated bagasse represents 75 % of the diet while the rest 25 % was the conventional concentrcte mixture. This experiment started on July 1985 and lasted till October 1985 (summer experiment). In winter season (December 1985 to ~arch 1586)this experiiment was Set-up again with an additional treatment of H2S04• A diluted solution of H2S04 was sprinkled over the untreated bagasse i~ quantities th8t provide 2.4 % H2S04 of the dried bagasse. In this winter experiment five Ossimi rams were offered these five tre2t~ents (untreated S.C.B., 5 % NeOH treated S.C.B., 2.5 % NaOH plus 2.5 % Ca(OH)2 treated S.C.B., 12.35 % llli40H (6 % NH3) treated.
