Abstract

The theory of Quantum size effects QSE in thin films is discussed through out this study. An expression, for the density of electronic states in thin films that satisfy the condition for occurring of the QSE, is obtained using the one electron theory. This function shows an oscillatory dependence with the film thickness. This oscillatory dependence is the main feature of QSE.
On the same footing with the density of state functions we have considerd, the reflection and transmission of incident particles from and into thin films by calculating the transmission and reflection coefficients. The films are approximated either as a potential wells or potential barriers. In either cases an oscillatory dependence of the first resonance energy (ground stste energy) in thin films with the film thicknesses.
