Abstract

This study was performed during 2005 and 2006 seasons on Superior grapevine in a private vineyard located at El-Odissat Village, Armant district, Qena Governorate. It aimed at examining the effect of pinching the main shoots with or without topping or removing laterals on berry set %, yield as well as physical and chemical characters of Superior grapevines.
This experiment included two factors (A and B).The first factor A consisted from the following ten treatments from summer pruning practices: unpinching, pinching the main shoots before bloom or just after berry setting or at veraison stage, pinching both the main shoots and lateral shoots at the same stages and pinching the main shoots and removing lateral shoots also at the same stages. While the second factor (B) comprised from the following four treatments untreated vines, foliar application of P + K + Mg or Zn + Fe + B or P + K + Mg + Zn + Fe + B.
According to the obtained results, it is concluded that pinching both the main and lateral shoots before first bloom and treating the vines three times with a mixture containing 0.5% orthophosphoric acid, 0.5% potassium sulphate, 0.5% magnesium sulphate, 0.05% chelated Zn, 0.05% chelated Fe and 0.025% boric acid was actually the best treatment for advancing maturation, improving yield and quality of Superior grapevines, controlling shot berries % and promoting the potentiality for exporting such prime grapevines cv. to foreign markets. These results ensured that the removal of lateral shoots in Superior grapevines should be avoided for its negative effect on fruiting and quality.
