Abstract

The Acari is an important division of the great Arthroopodan class Arachnida. They are cosmopolitian in distribuution and are present in terrestrial, marine and fresh water habitats.
Several species of mites a~e commonly found in house dust. Some of these mites inhabit stored food-stuff (Stored product mites and their predators), some others are usually associated with plants (phytophagous mites) others, usually the most numerous, occur in nests and habitats of warmmblooded animals (nest dweller mites) and fourth group
of mites live as parasitic mites causing pathogenicity which varies in its degree. However, there is a taxonomically and ecologically defined group of mi tes to which the term”house dust mites” is given and they are classified into genus Dermatophagoides and family pyroglyphidae (Acaridida).
House dust mites were detected from the house dust for the first time by Baker et al. (1956), in the course of examination of material specimen tor purpose other than colllecting pyroglyphids. Spieksma-Boezeman was the first Inveestigator to discover that these hou:,e dust nJit”’s \”ere common in house dust and her investigation results were included in the paper published by Voorhorst et al. (1964). Afterwards that paper initiated the interest of workers in the field house dust mites and their relation to allergy.
