Abstract

Due to competition, present-ability of results is important. Biasness in quality determination, as samples is either from the beginning or the end of the fabrics makes an automatic measurement system is important for laboratory and production. Procedures to measure knitted fabric density, yarn diameter, and loop length using Image Processing techniques are presented in this work. From which cover factor and mass per unit area were obtained. These procedures were designed to suit solid color single jersey, rib, and interlock fabrics. The acquisition system is based on a flatbed scanner and a digital camera, black box, and eight lamps equally distributed above the fabric. The number of wales measuring method depends on the power spectrum of the fabric images, while courses count method depends on the variations of the pixels intensity values. The average diameter and nominal axis diameter procedures were used to measure the knitted yarn diameter. These procedures depend on the loops legs dimensions. Two models were used to determine the knit loop length. The first one depends on length-, orientation of loop leg, and wale pitch. While the second depends on wale pitch, courses height, and yarn count. A modification of the rib model was proposed to attain higher correlation. The knitting construction elements obtained from the image methods that showed the least significant differences from the manual methods were used to calculate cover factor and mass per unit area.
