Abstract

This thesis presents a theoretical solution for the bending of reinforced concrete slabs ,or generally plates , with holes. The analysis depends on en idealization of the structural form in order that it may be reduced to a form
Which permits handling by usual computational methods .
This convenient approach is achieved by using the minimum potential energy technique with Some simplifying assumptions in order to formulate the necessary equationsfrom which the results are obtained.
The proposed method is used to determine
The deflection of slabs with one or several holes under the action of uniformly distributed load. Then the analysis is extended to deal with the bending of slabs with holes but stiffened by ribs.
The analysis shows that direct and accurate expressions can be established from which the values of the final deflected from of slabs with holes and be found. Having calculated the deflection, it is simple, therefore, to calculate the bending moments from direct equations and to establish economic stiffening procedure for the holes if necessary.
The investigation of the problem is also adopted by using a finite element based computer program. The comparison of
results between the proposed energy approach and those of the finite element analysis indicates the accuracy and acceptability of such an approach.
