Abstract

The tribe Cichorieae of the family Compositae is known to conta±ri species which yield sesquiterpene
‘‘ Certain of these compounds possess antitumor activity, microbial growth irthibitors,
lergnic contact dermatitis, insect feeding deterrents, plant-growth inhibitors and anti—inflammatory activity.
This thesis comprises a pharmacognostical study of chardia tingitana (L.) Roth. var. orientalis (L.) Asoh. et Schweiff., aM Sco]-us hispanicus (I.). Both plants are indigenous to Egypt and belonging to the tribe Ciohorieae. Literature survey appears to lack information coneerning the active constituents of these two plants.
Accordingly, it was deemed of interest to investigate the above mentioned plants with a. view to isolate, characterise and identify their chemical active constituents, whenever possible. The macro— and micromorphology of the two plants were studied in order to identify them both in the entire and powdered forms.
