Abstract The use of coliphages as indicators of wastewater pollution was investigated. Water samples representing different types of water: raw sewage, treated sewage, brackish water, fresh water and seawater were used as water source points. Seasonal estimates of somatic coliphages together with the bacterial indicators: total coliforms, faecal coliforms and faecal streptococci were carried out. Some physicochemical parameters of all water samples were measured. The correlation between all four indicators and the water parameters were assessed. Three coliphage isolates were isolated from wastewater samples, propagated, and further characterized. |
