Abstract

Flavonoids are a subclass of polyphenols found in fruits, vegetables, grains, bark, roots, stems, flowers, and tea. This study aimed to investigate the effect of flavonoids present in some Egyptian vegetable on Biological and Biochemical aspect of male albino rats. Five and ten percent of red carrot, aged onion and yellow sweet potato extracts were used for experimental design. Moisture, protein, fat, ash, fiber were determined, carbohydrate was calculated by difference. Flavonoids content were determined by HPLC. Forty eight adult male albino rats sprague Dawley strain weighing 120-150 g, 10 weeks old were used. The rats were divided into eight groups of rats each with similar weight. One of them was negative control fed standard diet while the other groups fed hyperlipidemic hypercholesterolemic diet for 3 weeks till the weigh of animals reach 190-200g then fed experimental diets (standard diet containing vegetables extracts 5% and 10% from red carrot, onion, and sweet potato) for four weeks. Food and water were provided ad-libitum for all groups as follow: group(1) negative control : fed standard diet. Group(2) positive control: hyperlipidemic hyper cholesterolemic rats fed standard diet. Group(3) hyperlipidemic hypercholesterolemic rats fed standard diet + 5% red carrot extract. Group(4) hyperlipidemic hypercholesterolemic rats fed standard diet +10% red carrot extract. Group(5) hyperlipidemic hypercholesterolemic rats fed standard diet + 5% onion extract. Group(6) hyperlipidemic hypercholesterolemic rats fed standard diet + 10% onion extract. Group(7) hyperlipidemic hypercholesterolemic rats fed standard diet + 5% sweet potato extract.Group(8) hyperlipidemic hypercholesterolemic rats fed standard diet + 10% sweet potato extract.
