Abstract The wide spread of the use of masonry structures resulted in the creation of different construction techniques in building masonry walls The behaviour of concrete block masonry walls subjected to concentrated load is a commonly encountered problem in practice for design of masonry structures such as cross beams lintel supports, etc . The behaviour of solid masonry walls under a concentrated load was studied before , but the performance of hollow , grouted and reinforced concrete masonry walls under the same type of loading is still a matter of research . In this study , an experimental program was performed to investigate the effect of the different constituent materials of concrete block masonry walls ( hollow , grouted and reinforced ) on the mechanical and deformational behaviours of these walls under a concentrated load . A total of twenty four wall panels were used to study the effect of mortar strength , grout strength and the steel reinforcement of the bond beam on the crack pattern and made of failure , cracking load , load - deflection relationship, and horizontal and vertical strain distribution . It was found that the increase in mortar strength of hollow masonry walls resulted in an increase in the cracking and ultimate loads and in the stiffness of the walls , and a reduction in the vertical and horizontal strains The same effect was noticed in grouted masonry walls , but only a slight change was recorded at high values of mortar strength The enhancement in the mechanical properties of grouted walls due to the presence of grout columns was significant . However , the grout strength had no effect on the different mechanical properties of the grouted walls . Reinforced walls by both bond beam and vertical and horizontal reinforcement showed higher capacity in resisting a concentrated load than unreinforced ones Lastly the increase in the main reinforcement of the bond beam lead to an increase in the mechanical behaviour of these reinforced walls . In addition , a brief cost estimate of wall bearing structures of concrete block masonry was introduced to make a comparison between its cost and the cost of the skel ton structure types . it was found that the cost of the bearing wall type is equal about 90 % of cost for skelton structure type . |
