Abstract

Aim of the work
To review various common causes pathogenesis and methods of investigations of optic atrophy in children.
Conclusions
It is obvious that the history is vital and particular attention should be paid to and family history of poor vision, consanguinity of the parents, the progress of pregnancy and any suspicion of lack of weight gain as well as any immediately prenatal problems.
When the optic atrophy is definitely unilateral the cause is anterior to the chiasm and when it is definitely diseases or a disease involving the pathways posterior to the chiasm.
After the advent of computed tomography and magnetic resonance, it was found that the most frequent cause of optic atrophy cause tumors (37%). The most common tumor was glioma. The second most common cause was inflammation in the form of meningitis or optic neuritis (17%). The third most frequent cause was head trauma (11%). Other frequently observed causes are perinatal diseases and hydrocephalus.
