Abstract

Due to change from the so-called soderberg cells to prebaked anode technology at the aluminum company of Egypt ( Egypt alum ) . it was decided to adopt coke bed preheating in the newly installed production lines . to preheat the aluminum reduction cells with coke bed , it is necessary to have a specially designed shunt rheostat with it design parameters depending upon cell design and desired preheating specification .in the present work computational studies together with associated computer are developed to evaluate and determined the necessary data , which is required for shunt design . based upon the previous developed procedures , one set of shunt rheostat made of aluminum designed manufactured and employed successfully in cell preheating .
Success of aluminum shunt rheostat and the developed designed methodology encourage describe design modifications to be made . two sets of NICKEL – Chrome shunt units were built and used successfully to preheat about 86 cells installed recently in a new production line at Egypt alum smelter .
An attempt to optimize the developed design parameters for the shunt rheostat was made . the finite element method is used in these parametric studies .
Results of this optimization will assist in evaluation of better design parameters to be used in future generations of shunt rheostat for different preheating conditions at Egypt alum .
