Abstract

Aim of the work
To evaluate the efficacy of deep sclerectomy in management of primary open angle glaucoma, with its possible complications through comparative study with trabeculectomy.
Results
Our results were selected and subjected to statistical analysis, we concluded that:
1- There was significant reduction of IOP after surgery in both groups with lower level in the trabeculectomy group.
2- Visual acuity gradually decreased in both groups in the early post operative period with regain of the preoperative level at the end of the follow up period.
3- Minimal changes between the preoperative and postoperative values of cup/disc ratios and pattern standard deviation in both groups.
4- Higher incidence of operative and postoperative complications in trabeculectomy group.
So, both trabeculectomy and non-penetrating deep sclerectomy have a good control of intraocular pressure, success rates with fewer complications in deep sclerectomy group, that make deep sclerectomy an ideal alternative to trabeculectomy in the management of primary open angle glaucoma, provided that it has a long term control of IOP.
