Abstract

Aim of the work
To evaluate the efficacy of grommets tube insertion as a line of treatment for otitis media with effusion.
Results obtained should be summarized as follows:
1- Normal tympanic membrane with normal middler ear pressure could be detected in 29.1% of the examined ears with no significant statistical differences between various groups of study.
2- Tympanosclerosis was demonstrated in 48% of examined ears, and most of them were in group II and III. Also, there were statistical significant differences between group I versus group II, and group I versus III which were 0.008 and 0.006 respectively. But, there were no significant statistical difference between groups I versus group II.
3- Permanent perforation was demonstrated in 2.3% of examined ears with no significant statistical difference between various groups of the study.
4- Atrophic scars were demonstrated in 10% of studied ears, most of them were in Group II and III significant statistical difference between group I versus II (P= 0.001).
5- Recurrent of effusion was demonstrated in 16.7% of studied ears, most of them were concluded in group II and III, but with no significant statistical difference between various groups of the study.
From the previous results, we can conclude that the occurrence of long term complications that accompany grommets application must not limit the use of these tubes, as grommets application is considered, till now, the most common surgical line of treatment for bilateral otitis media with effusion.
