Abstract

Aim of the work
Is to examine whether, on the basis of neopterin as a marker, liver diseases could be classified according to etiology and stage of disease. Also, whether neopterin concentrations could be correlated with other laboratory and clinical parameters.
Conclusion
1- Liver diseases represent major and complicated health problem in childhood. There are many etiologic factors associated with liver diseases e.g. infections, genetic, vascular, toxic …etc.
2- Viral hepatitis is the most prevalent factor of liver disease among Egyptian children.
3- Activated macrophages participate in liver disease, progressing to cirrhosis.
4- Neopterin is a marker for immune activation.
5- Liver function tests are usually within normal in most cases with liver diseases; this reflects the large functional reserve of the liver so it can tolerate minimal or even moderate cell injury.
6- Neopterin serum level is usually higher in most cases with liver disease.
7- Neopterin serum level is significantly increased in acute liver disease.
8- Neopterin serum level is highly significant in both chronic cirrhotic and chronic non cirrhotic liver diseases.
