Abstract Aim of the work To analyze diarrhoeal deaths in the rehydration center at Bab EL-Sha’rya University Hospital, in order to determine their clinical, epidemiological, demographic and laboratory characteristics in order to put recommendations for lowering the case fatality rate. Conclusion The study came to the conclusion that the following were risk factors for diarrhoeal deaths. More attention should be directed towards infants and children with one or more of these risk factors: age under 1 year, female sex, coming to the center at off peak hours, non breast fed infant, non compliance with vaccination schedule, illness for seven days or more before admission, bloody diarrhea, moderate or sever dehydration at time of admission, diarrhea associated with pneumonia, ileus or convulsions, temperature 380c or more on admission, presence of malnutrition, weight below 6 kg, hemoglobin below 9gm/dl, and diarrhea associated with complications of hyponatraemia, hypokalamia and/or acidosis. |
