Abstract

The aim of the present work is to evaluate the significance of serum procollagen ΙΙΙ peptide and plasma fibronectin as an indicator for the assessment of the activity of fibrotic process in arteritis and atherosclerosis.
Our results showed that total collagen content of the arterial specimens of arteritis and atherosclerosis was found significantly high when compared to control group.
There was no significant differences in PΙΙΙP in arteritic group (Group 1) compared to control group, but in comparing the clinically advanced cases of arteritis to the control group, though there was increase in PΙΙΙP level with the progress of the disease but still insignificant.
In Group ΙΙ (atherosclerotic Group): PΙΙΙP level was found higher than the normal group, but the difference was insignificant. In cases with clinically advanced atherosclerosis disease the PΙΙΙP level was found to be significantly higher than normal. This indicates active progressive fibrogenesis in atherosclerosis.
Comparing the PΙΙΙP level in Group Ι and group ΙΙ was found that it is significantly higher in group ΙΙ. This significance was more prominent with the progress of atherosclerosis disease.
The plasma fibronectin level was significantly lower sin both arteritic and atherosclerosis groups compared to control, this indicates active fibrogenesis in both groups.
The present study proved that plasma fibronectin level was better and more sensitive than serum PΙΙΙP as an indicator for assessment of fibrogenic activity in arteritis and atherosclerosis.
Also the study opened the discussion for using antifibrotic agents in management of arterial diseases for prevention or diminishing their complications.
