Abstract

The aim of this work is to study definitive types of neonatal intestinal obstruction, to evaluate the predisposing factors and to identify the proper diagnoses of these cases. Also, this study is aiming to study the different prognosis factors and to evaluate the operative and non operative management of cases of neonatal intestinal obstruction. A histopathological examination of specimens removed will be also evaluated and studied in this work.
We conclude from this study:
If the early signs of intestinal obstruction are overlooked, complications will develop as a consequence of prolonged obstruction. The most important complications are severe dehydration, metabolic acidosis, and respiratory distress with pneumonia from aspiration of vomitus, and hypothermia, septicaemia is a serious complication which ends the baby’s life. The presence of peri-umbilical erythema and/or edema of the anterior abdominal wall signify an intraperitoneal complication such as peritonitis or intestinal gangrene.
Management of these cases is best undertaken by pediatric surgeons is specially designated neonatal surgical centers with continuous accurate observation by experienced nursing staff. The neonate should be managed in an intensive care unit in an incubator with regulation of the body temperature, oxygen supply and adequate humidity.
