Abstract The aim of this work is to compare the efficacy of open and laparoscopic Nissen fundopliation in controlling the symptoms of GERD, and to investigate the complications, outcome, and recurrence rate after both procedures. In conclusion, we found that: Laparoscopic and open Nissen fundopliation are effective methods in the operative treatment of GERD in short-term and result in a significant improvement in patients gastrointestinal symptoms. The laparoscopic approach to Nissen fundopliation improved early post operative recovery, with an equally good when compared to open approach. Also, the advantages of laparoscopic fundoplication include shorter hospital stay, earlier return to normal activities. The failure rate after laparoscopic Nissen is acceptable low. Laparoscopic fundoplication can be introduced safely by established consultants provided that adequacy of training is confirmed by repeated audit. Prolonged operative time can be reduced with increased experience. |
