Abstract

Aim of the work
1- To find out changes in neuropsychological tests associated with lumbar canal stenosis.
2- Correlations between clinical data, C.T. findings and neuropsychological changes associated with lumbar canal stenosis.
Conclusion
In the present study, SSEP, neither latencies, inter-peak latencies nor amplitude showed significant changes compared to the control group and no significant correlation was recorded between SSEP values and clinical presentation.
However, only 3 patients (9.4%) had prolongation of absolute latency of N20 above the normal control mean +/- 2SD. This may be due to the fact that the functionally disabling symptoms in those patients are often related to neurogenic claudication which is exercise induced symptom that may represent intermittent, state dependant root dysfunction.
So, it is understandable that studies performed with the patient at rest do not reflect the pathophysiology that brought the patient to medical attention. The absence of neurologic findings in most of our patients seems to support this possibility and also may be due to anomalous innervating patterns or inter-segmental anastomoses of dorsal rootlets, dorsal root ganglia and spinal cord arising independently in the embryo and is subsequently joined by developing dorsal rootlets.
