Abstract The main aim of the study was to estimate the levels of plasma plasminogen activator inhibitor (PAI) and protein S (PS) in patients with preeclampsia and in gestational age matched controls at first. The second aim, was to represent the correlation of these levels with prenatal outcome. This was done to clarify the role of the coagulation and fibrinolytic systems in normal pregnancy and in pregnancy complicated by preeclampsia. On conclusion plasma plasminogen activator inhibitor levels increase steadily in preeclampsia compared with normal pregnancy. These levels correlate with the duration of pregnancy and severity of preeclampsia. A wider scale prospective study is recommended before routine application of these assays and for the proper selection of patients in whom these assays might be valuable as parameters of maternal or fetal condition. |
