Abstract

The aim of this study which is a prospective comparative study, is to compare the sensitivity, specificity, predictive values and diagnostic accuracy of both two dimensional ultrasound and three dimensional ultrasound in prenatal diagnosis of fetal anomalies in high risk cases.
The conclusions were:
1- 2DUS still the main standard imaging technique in prenatal screening and diagnosis of fetal malformation.
2- 3DUS is a great advance in recent technology and allow better visualization and good understanding of the fetal anatomy.
3- 3DUS allow the physician and the parents to actually understand the fetal defect present and give a good chance for the parents to share in decision making as regard termination of the pregnancy or consultation of the plastic surgeon.
4- The training that all ultrasound personnel receive has clearly resulted in our ability to visualize 3 dimensions from a 2D real-time display without much difficulty.
For this reason; it remains unclear whether 3D imaging is truly necessary for the detection of fetal malformations, it is also fair to say that most fetal malformations identifiable sonographically are visualized with standard 2D imaging.
5- Tree-dimensional sonography, therefore, is not a screening technique but an adjunct to 2D sonography for those fetuses in which malformations are already determined or suspected on the basis of standard 2DUS.
