Abstract

Programmed cell death, or apoptosis is an active form of cell death that is initiated by a number of stimuli and is intricately regulated.
Apoptosis in both excessive and reduced amounts has pathophysiologic implications. Accelerated programmed cell death has been observed in leukocytes among patients with chronic renal failure (CRF). This has been ascribed in part to the retention of uremic toxins.
Extensive investigations on apoptosis in the kidneys to clarify the pathogenesis of renal diseases have been carried out. There is evidence that apoptosis intervenes in diverse renal disease processes such as glomerulonephritis, tubular injury, and renal cystic lesions.
The role of fas in apoptosis of peripheral mononuclear cells from uremic patients and its relation to kidney functions and haemodialysis therapy is the design of the present study.
This study was conducted on seventy uremic patients classified into 2 groups: Group I (patients under regular haemodialysis) and Group II (patients not under dialysis), and compared with fifteen normal control persons (Group III).
Thorough history taking and complete clinical examination was done stressing on cause of renal disease, duration of dialysis and absence of exclusion criteria. Routine and specific investigations such as fas(CD95) expression on PMNCs by flow cytometry and molecular detection of apoptosis by DNA fragmentation assay using gel electrophoresis, were done.
Both uremic groups were compared to each other and to the control group.
