Abstract Aim of the work The study is aiming to discuss the relationship between iron overload status in hemodialyzed patients in the sitting of inflammation and/or malnutrition. Conclusion We found that in group of 100 MDH patients serum ferritin concentrations were higher in malnourished patients assessed by the SGA and other similar nutritional scoring tools after comparing serum ferritin in the all three groups. We also found that a good correlation existed between serum ferritin and CRP concentrations when the range of serum ferritin was restricted between 200/2000ng/ml. this association was independent of confounding factors such as age and gender. Those MDH patients with a serum ferritin value >800ng/ml had also higher MIS scores and increased serum CRP levels. These findings imply that serum ferritin is both a marker of iron status and an indicator of inflammation and/or malnutrition in maintenance dialysis patients. |
