Abstract

The present work is concerned with the application and the development of the finite element method ( FEM ) for solving the electromagnetic field problems. A three-dimensional finite element automatic mesh generation for discretising any three-dimensional magnetostatic field for an air-cored reactor.
The conventional FEM was successfully used for two-dimensional eddy current problems, for material of different permeabilities, at low frequencies. However, at high frequencies, the method fails to give accurate results.
To deal with the two-dimensional eddy current problems associated with high frequencies, a new implementation of the impedance boundary condition ( IBC ) approximation with the FEM is presented. The main advantage of the proposed approach (IBC-FEM) that it works at high frequency with reasonable degree of accuracy. Moreover, the number of unknowns of the problem is greatly reduced by that approach.
Consequently, the developed algorithm that uses the conventional FEM at low frequencies and the IBC approach at high frequencies, problems over the whole frequency range can be solved.
