Abstract

HCC is the fifth most common tumor worldwide.
are caused by HCC worldwide and its incidence appears to be gradually increasing.
The causes of the underlying liver disease differ according to the geographical distribution.
LC is the strongest underlying risk factor, being present in more than 80% of HCC cases.
Neopterin is an aromatic pteridine derived from intracellular GTP produced by human monocyte-derived macrophages upon stimulation with IFN-γ.
A strong correlation between neopterin levels and the severity, progression, and outcome of infectious, inflammatory and malignant diseases was found.
The aim of this study is to evaluate the clinical significance of neopterin as a potential marker for hepatocellular carcinoma and to compare its significance to AFP and PIVKA-II.
To achieve this goal 40 patients with newly diagnosed HCC developed on top of liver cirrhosis and 20 patients with cirrhosis were selected from outpatient clinic of hepatology and inpatient wards,National Liver Institute, in addition to 20 apparently healthy subjects matching age and gender of the patients served as a control group.
