Abstract

Aim of the work
1- To evaluate on hospital based study the prevalence of anti-HCV among house hold contacts of anti-HCV positive CLD.
2- To evaluate the familial clustering of CLD in EL-Minia governorate.
3- To elucidate the possible routes of HCV transmission.
Conclude
Firstly: the higher mean ages of relatives and all were more than 15 years.
Secondly: all of the index cases were at late stage liver disease (liver cirrhosis and/ or HCC) which means a long period of acquiring the disease and a prolonged exposure of contacts with relatives.
Thirdly: history of bilharziasis among 25% of the relatives and half of them received parental anti-bilharzial treatment.
Clinical and ultrasonographic evaluation of the relatives reveal that 32 (21%) have hepatomegaly clinically and 20 (13.3%) have bright liver and 10 (6.7%) have criteria suggestive of liver cirrhosis ultrasonographically.
Anti-HCV positively was significantly higher in those with hepatomegaly clinically and those with bright liver or criteria suggestive of liver cirrhosis ultrasonographically.
from this study, we can conclude that family members of HCV-related CLD are at increased risk of acquiring the infection with HCV and intra-familial transmission of HCV must be considered.
Family members of HCV- related liver diseases must be followed routinely by:
1- Clinical and ultrasonographic examination.
2- Anti HCV and liver enzymes.
3- Education about the possible routes of transmission.
