Abstract Aim of the work To measure serum levels of melatonin and its circadian rhythm in patients with liver cirrhosis and to find its correlation with neuropsychiatric disturbances that occurs early and late in those patients. Conclusions We concluded that: the patients with liver cirrhosis have high level of serum melatonin at 4am, 8am and at the day time have high level. The time at which the hormone is normally low this may explain sleep disturbances in those patients. Also they have impairment in cognitive functions that correlated positively with child’s grading some of these functions, e.g. visuo-motor (as assessed by Bender Gestalt test) was found to be dependant on changes of melatonin level. Recommendations Further studies in the future using higher number of patients. More frequent samples, hoping to find out a possible therapeutic role of melatonin. |
