Abstract

This study involved the conjunctival swelling presented to the Pathology Department, Faculty of Medicine, Menia University. 71 specimens were included. The high incidence of conjunctival squamous cell carcinomas may be correlated to the effect of ultraviolet light in the locality. The same suggested explanation may be also applied to the relatively high number of pterygium cases. The clinicians depended on their experience about the gross picture of the conjunctival swellings which is a characteristic in some lesions but still the other have no specific gross appearance. That is why 53.7% of the reported clinical provisional diagnoses were confirmed by the histopathological diagnoses, while the rest are not confirmed. (Author / FT).
The present study has involved the conjunctival swellings that were presented to the pathology department, faculty of medicine, el-minia university, during the period from 1/1/1992 to 31/12/1996. seventy one specimens were included. These cases were subjected to a statistical and histopathological study including patients ages , male to female ratio , behaviour of swellings, correlation between the clinical provisional diagnosis –if present- and the final histopathological diagnosis, and the specific subcategories of the swellings. Special stains were used in special situations to detect specific pathologic changes and confirm the diagnosis.
