Abstract

Herpes simplex infection is one of the major cause of congenital fetal malformation which also include toxoplasmosis , rubella and cytomegalovirus. Giemsa stain of vaginal and cervical smears is still a useful simple method to detect HSV infection but it lacks specificity. Direct detection of HSV by elisa technique is a rapid and sensitive method of virus detection with high specificity and sensitivity that can be compared to virus culture. Pregnancy showed to increase the risk of HSV infection especially in females below 35 years old with decreasing incidence with higher age. HSV type 2 in positive cases. Further large scale studies are recommended to study the prevalence of HSV among fertile female in Egypt. Plysiem should be aware of the value of serological follow up of HSV in positive cases especially in the last trimester of pregnancy.
