Abstract
Aim of the work
To determine the frequency of CMV and its role in complication of some hematological diseases.
Conclusions
1- The mechanism leading to decrease in platelet numbers in these cases may involve the production of multiple auto-antibodies or the suppression of the hematopoiesis of human progenitor cells by CMV.
2- There were association between CMV infection and development of thrombocytopenia, a plastic and absolute lymphocytosis.
3- These results are warning sign for further evaluation of hazards of this virus especially in bone marrow cells. Further study with special stress on: use of electron microscopy for detection of viral particles, molecular probes for detection of viral nucleotide sequences, immunoflurescence and histochemical staining for viral antiagents and tissue culture technique for virus recovery from the bone marrow. HLA typing of all patients with thrombocytopenia should be considered, since it is reasonable to speculate that the genetic predisposition to platelet disorders and bone marrow failure might be related to susceptibility to infection with cytomegalovirus.
4- The statistical power of this study is low and large prospective study is needed.
