Abstract The purpose of our study is to evaluate the pritective effect of L-carnitine and NAC or their combination on CCl4-intoxicated rats. This will be achieved by measuring the following parameters : serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) activity, serum aspartate aminotransferase (AST) activity, serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, plasma sialic acid level, plasma albumin level, plasma total bilirubin level, plasma nitrite level, liver total protein content, liver glutathione content, liver lipid peroxide level, and liver vitamin C content. Also, histopathological examination of liver tissue will be done. from our results, it could be noticed (from the treatment with L-carnitine and NAC) that there were pronounced improvements in all studied parameters. The regression of lipid peroxide content of the liver as well as the recovery of GSH, vitamin C, plasma bilirubin, plasma albumin, olasma nitrite and plasma sialic acid level, also ALT, AST, and ALP activities up to or towards the normal range which could be explained on the basis of improvement the liver functions and the protection against the oxidative damage. Also, may be due to the reduction of oxidative stress produced due to CCl4 injection with consequent improvement of the activity of the antioxidant system as GSH and vitamin C. from all results obtained in the present study, we can conclude that L-carnitine (B-hydroxy,γ-trimethyl amino butyric acid) and N-acetyl cysteine (a sulfur-containing amino acid) have a remarkable hepatoprotective effect against CCl4-induced hepatotoxicity. |
