Abstract

Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) is one of the chronic rheumatic illness in children and is a significant cause of short and long-term disability. The causes of JRA remain unclear; it seems to be a complex genetic triat involving the effects of multiple genes related to immunity and inflammation Epidemiological research in the field of pediatric rheumatology is important for reasons such as the identification of possible etiological factors, description of the nature history, identification of biologically homogenous disease groups and health care planning Several subgroups have been defined according to the number of involved joints during the first six months of the disease and the occurrence of extra-articular manifestations This study was aiming to evaluate the cardiopulmonary function in juvenile rheumatoid arthritis For this purpose, the study included 20 patients who fulfilled the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) criteria for diagnosis of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. All patients attended the Pediatric Department in Faculty of Medicine in Minofiya University Hospital. The group of cases consists of 12 female (60 %) and 8 male (40 %) with a mean and standard deviation of age 11.05±2.79. They were studied in comparison with 20 apparently healthy children 12 females, 8 males with mean and standard deviation of age 10.09±3.21 as a control group. They were age, sex and socioeconomic state matched with patient group.
