المستخلص The college setting represents an untapped ”window of opportunity” to target the growing number of college student smokers . Quitting tobacco use at any point of life provides both immediate and long-term benefits to health. objectivesThe aim 0 f this study was to assess the knowledge, attittude and readiness of the smoker students in Suez canal univerisity in Ismailia campus to quit smoking.subjects , Methods: Participants were 1321 college student randomized as a stratified random sample in 10 faculties during the academic year 2007-2008. The stage of readiness was assessed according to the five-stage transtheoretical model that described by Prochasa. Assessment of the attitude was conducted by the five- point likert scale . Measurement of the confidence degree was conducted by the contemplation ladder that range from one to 10 . Results: the prevalence of smoking was 16.9%. The study revealed that about half of smokers were in precontemplation stage, quarter in the contemplation stage and quarter were in the preparation stage. The study revealed lack of knowledge ofthe smokers about smoking cession methods espically nicotine replacement theraby like nicotine patches and gums. The study revealed that most smokers do not agree with banning smoking at faculty, work and public places. In addition, they do not agree with increase the price of tobacco products sharply despite their agreement with forbidding its advertisements and sales for younger than 18 years. The study revealed no signifecant difference between precontemplators , contemplators and preparetors regading attittude of feeling toward smoking but the precontemplators were different regading the motivation &confidence degrees to quit and the attitude toward recommendations to reduce smoking .Conclusion, Recommendations: The study recommends arranging a permanent anti-tobacco consultation team in the university to help smokers use feasible methods to quit smoking. Beside that. Specific programs should be directed by different mass media to increase awareness of people about methods assisting tobacco cessation. |
