Abstract

As long as history has been recorded, every society has used drugs that alter mood, thought, and feeling. In addition, pharmacological advances sometimes have been paralleled by physical as well as unfortunate behavioral dependence on agents initially consumed for therapeutic purposes.
Recently drugs are so commonly used and abused that virtually everyone has some familiarity with the concepts of drug addiction, misuse and abuse. In Egypt, the most commonly abused drugs till the beginnings of the World War I were cannabis and opium.
Before the end of this war cocaine followed by heroin was introduced.
During World War II cocaine and heroin were DROPped.
By late 1970s, heroin reappeared.
Ancient use of several drugs served socially desired medicinal, ritualistic, and religious functions. These drugs also were used recreationally. Not surprisingly, discussions of the negative effects of some drugs appear anecdotally.
Opium, Coca, and Hallucinogens in Antiquity, although it was not until the mid-19th century that the peril of opiate addiction was first recognized, juice from the Papaver somniferum was known for its medicinal value in Egypt at least as early as the writing of the Ebers Papyrus in 1500 B.C.
Benzodiazepines are widely prescribed for a variety of conditions, particularly anxiety and insomnia. They are relatively safe and, with verdose, rarely result in death. However, used chronically, benzodiazepines can be addicting.
