Abstract

cardiomyopathies are diseases that involve the myocardium directly and are not the result of hypertension, congenital, valvular, coronary, arterial or pericardial abnormalities. Among cardiomyopathies, dilated cardiomyopathy is the most frequent entity. Although the cause is not definable in many cases, this condition represents a final common pathway of myocardial damage produced by variety of toxic, metabolic or infectious agents. Selenium deficiency has been well documented in the pathogenesis and pathology of Keshan disease, cardiomyopathy named for Keshan country in China. The aim of this work is to measure selenium level in patients with dilated cardiomyopathy to determine the possible role of selenium in the pathogenesis of dilated cardiomyopathy and uncover a possible relation between them.
