Abstract

The prostate is a hormone-dependent accessory sex gland, it produces about 10%of seminal fluid and has a beneficial effect on sperm motility, as the prostatic fluid counteract the acidity of the vaginal fluid and stimulates sperm motility. Secretory activity of the prostate requires adequate testosterone levels. Cigarette smoking is common in societies worldwide and has been identified as injurious to human health. A smoker inhales about 4720 toxic and mutagenic substances such as carbon monoxide, aromatic hydrocarbons and nicotine. Nicotine, as most biologically active chemical in tobacco smoke is responsible for tobacco dependence and its multiple harmful effects on different body systems as it is absorbed during the act of smoking. The aim of the present work was, to throw some light on the histological, histochemical and ultra structural effects of nicotine on the prostate of adult rats and the possible protective role of vitamin C as it is known by its antioxidant effects.
