Abstract

Auditory channel is one of the main avenues for learning, through which both peripheral and central auditory mechanisms share in language acquisition and learning process. Central Auditory Processing (CAP) refers to the efficiency and effectiveness by which the central
nervous system (CNS) utilizes auditory information.
Central Auditory Processing Disorder CAPD refers to difficulties in the perceptual processing of auditory information in the CNS as demonstrated by poor performance in one or more of the above mentioned skills and the most prevalent presenting picture of CAPD is difficulty in discrimination in background noise which is termed ”selective auditory attention disorder”.
Concerning maturation of selective auditory attention, it was reported that the effect of noise on the speech perception ability of children would be greater than on adults, so children require greater signal to noise (S/N) ratio than adults. The development of selective auditory attention was assessed using Event-Related Brain Potentials (ERBP) on 8 years old children, 14 years old adolescents and 23 years old young adults, there was an increase in Nd amplitude, and a decrease in its latency with increased age.
Assessment of selective auditory attention. The earliest reports on central auditory processing assessment appeared in the late 1960’s.
Since that time, numerous committees of ASHA have been formed; conferences and symposia have been held to consider the nature of CAPD. The objectives of assessment in children are to ascertain the neuromaturational status and the integrity of central auditory nervous system particularly as they relate to the child’s communication, academic and social skills. Moreover, assessment provides data relevant to subsequent intervention. Assessment of CAP abilities such as selective auditory attention ability includes history-taking, behavioral (psychophysical) tests, electrophysiological tests as well as imaging techniques.
