Abstract

Malignant mesothelioma is a tumor that arises from the surface serosal cells of the pleura, peritoneum, pericardium or tunica vaginalis of testis. The most frequent location of this tumor is the pleura.
It is a highly malignant neoplasm from which there is no curative treatment.
Mesothelioma is closely related to asbestos exposure which is used widely for lagging pipes and boilers in the shipbuilding industries.
According to hospital based registry, malignant tumors of the pleura and the peritoneum are relatively infrequent tumors among all malignant tumors.
Malignant neoplasms registration and statistical analysis of the registered data in our community are crucial for detecting malignant neoplasms affecting our nation.
Also estimation of the age and the sex specific incidence of the different malignant tumors are very important that can provide data supportive for the screening programs of different neoplasms, and so, earlier diagnosis of malignant neoplasms before the patients become in advanced stage and improvement of the 5 year survival rate can be achieved.
The aim of this work is registration of all malignant tumors of the pleura and the peritoneum presented to Ain- Shams Specialized and Ain-Shams University hospitals in the period from 2001-2005, in order to detect the frequency in relation to other malignant tumors in Ain-Shams hospitals and correlate its types with other available clinical data.
