Abstract
Amiodarone is a very effective drug, widely used for tachyarrhythmias, but it is associated with many side effects involving many different organ systems. The aim of this study was to elucidate the effect of amiodarone on the thyroid gland and the lung and the possible protective role of vitamin E (α-tocopherol Fifty adult male albino rats were used in this study. Their average weight was 200 grams. They were divided into three groups as following The first group (group I, control group): this group consisted of twenty rats and was further subdivided into two equal subgroups Plain control: consisted of ten rats. They were kept without any treatment (five rats were sacrificed after three weeks and five rats were sacrificed after six weeks) and served as control for all the experimental groups Sham control: consisted of ten rats. Half of them received sunflower oil (0.5 ml/day) (the solvent used to dissolve alpha tocopherol) and the other half received vitamin E (100 mg/kg/day) dissolved in sunflower oil ingested by gavage for three weeks. The second group (group II, amiodarone treated group): this group consisted of twenty rats. They were subdivided into two subgroups as following Subgroup IIA: consisted of ten rats. Each rat received an oral dose of amiodarone (150 mg/kg/day) dissolved in 1 ml distilled water for three weeks by gavage. Subgroup IIB (recovery group): consisted of ten rats.
