Abstract Problem: Atherosclerosis was considered one of the most common diseases among middle age and old age Egyptians. Oxidative stress had been implicated in several important pathological processes, including lipid peroxidation, endothelial dysfunction and platelet hyper reactivity Context: The life of patients may be in danger due to many complications of atherosclerosis that include; arterial occlusion, detached thrombus or part of it and impaction in the arteries of many organs with dangerous complications e.g. Myocardial infarction and cerebrovascular stroke. The oxidative stress occurs when there was an imbalance between the production of reactive free radicals and the ability of tissue antioxidant mechanisms to remove them Aim: This study was designed to investigate the possible action of vitamin E that depends on the changes recorded in experimental atherosclerosis in the rabbit aorta, common carotid & coronary arteries. Question: Does vitamin E has a role in prevention or treatment of atherosclerosis Hypothesis: Hoping that such data can add more insight in understanding the histopathological and molecular mechanism of atherosclerosis and possibly its prevention and treatment Rational: This peroxidation mechanism can be prevented by anti- oxidant. This makes antioxidants a possible target for therapy of atherosclerosis. |
