Abstract (45) COPD patients and (10) age matched controls were studied for determination of the type of disturbances of (RAAS) in patients with COPD and the following results were obtained: Both (PRA) and (PA) were significantly higher In patients with COPD than that of controls and correlated positively with each other. There was no effect of sex, body weight, or age on (RAAS). Weak effect of smoking on (RAAS) stimulation was noticed and the pack year of smoking correlated positively with the degree of (RAAS) stimulation. Edema in COPD patients was associated with higher levels of CRAAS) stimulation. Hypercapnic patients showed higher values for both (PRA) and CPA) than normocapnic. Hypoxemic (COPD) patients showed higher values for both (PRA) and CPA) than non hypoxemic .. (PRA) values were higher in severe than in moderate COPD and the least values were in mild subgroup. (PA) was higher in moderate than in severe COPD and the least values were in mild subgroup. The need for mechanical ventilatory support was associated with higher values for (RAAS) stimulation. Mechanical ventilation caused further initial rise for (PRA) and (PA) values that returned back to less than the original preventilatory values after successful weaning. |
